The Rhine Falls are Europe’s largest waterfalls. They are located on the Upper Rhine, in the village of Neuhausen am Rhine fall, and just below Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland.
The waters of the Rhine flow at a speed of 23 meters over a width of 150 meters. The depth of the bath is 13 meters and the average torrential flow is 600 meters per second. A breathtaking view of the cascading waterfalls!
How to get there to visit the Rhine Falls
There are many ways to get to the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, whether by car, train or on a day trip.
If you have your own car, it is easy to reach the falls by car. You will find a car park on both sides of the river. The car park on the north bank (Schlössli Wörth) costs CHF 5 for the first hour and CHF 2 for each additional hour, while the south bank (Laufen Castle) offers free parking.
If you take a train to the falls, you can choose between two stations, either Neuhausen am Rhine fall on the north side of the falls or Schloss Laufen am Rhine fall on the south bank. From either station you can easily walk to the falls.
Rhine Falls book tickets and tour Boat cruises
If you are visiting between April and November, one of the most popular ways to discover the falls is to take a cruise on the Rhine Falls. There is a whole range of boat cruises available:
Rock tour: This 30-minute cruise takes you from the north bank to Rhine fall felsen, a rock in the centre of the falls. You can disembark from the boat and climb to the top of the rock via a staircase and onto the viewing platform for an excellent 360° panoramic view of the falls. Price of the boat tour of the Rhine Falls: CHF 20 per adult and CHF 10 per child (6-16 years).
Crossing the Rhine: This is a short three-minute cruise that takes you from one side of the falls to the other. Price of the boat trip across the Rhine Falls: CHF 3 one-way or CHF 5 return for adults and children (6-16 years) CHF 2 one-way and CHF 3 return.
An audio tour: This 30-minute tour takes you all around the river so that you can get a good view of the falls and comment on them is made in several languages all along the way. This cruise is only available in June, July and August.
Rhine Falls and Rhine River Cruise: Take a 30 or 75-minute cruise during which you will see the Rhine Falls and sail along the Rhine as far as the German border. Tickets for this cruise start at CHF 9 per adult and CHF 4.50 per child.
